GoetterdaemmerungBy John Constantine I think this is a pretty good time to be alive. Mind you, any time is a good time to be alive - it seems as if there's never a good time to be dead - but looking back in history, this seems to be particularly exciting. I'm a product of the seventies. I grew up believing I could, with sufficient capital, do anything. We seem to be living up to that standard. I personally feel that life is going to get a whole lot weirder before it starts getting sane. Knowledge is increasing at a break-neck pace - exponential, to say the least. Amazing how that curve really catches up with you. We're pretty darn close to cracking the genetic code, and when that happens, watch out. Life is about to get stranger than even the drug crazed techno punks (so they like to think) at Wired can even imagine. After all, they just comment and report on developments. They aren't actually creating the coming weird times. I firmly believe that evolution, on a scale not seen since the Cambrian times is happening right under our noses. Everybody feels it. But we're immersed in it. It's like a fish noticing water. It pervades the environment, and we get used to it. Like a frog in the mythical pot of water, inching it's way towards boiling. One minute you're swimming in a hot tub - the next your dinner. We've developed quite a nice little world mind here on the net. Mind you, I think this is going to be the least of what we're heading for in the near future. But, like the reptilian brain and the spinal column, some things are just basic infrastructure necessary to support massively higher functions. And when you have interconnected computing/communication devices that grow in your garden, are part of your dwelling - heck, they're even a part of your body... Well, the Universe will shift significantly. All the curmudgeons out there (and you know who you are) will sit back in their bathrobes and talk about how it's all destined to fail. But think about it. We're a bunch of nature's best adapted genetic algorithms. We solve problems. We may not be doing what we know is possible, but life has its own schedule. We ain't gonna fail. Well, at least we won't fail now. We here at HellBlazer have done our part in that. Editing out past mistakes is our trademark. Time-editing is what we do. And because we're the only ones who do it right (yes, we are that arrogant), we believe that we can safely predict success. So, the next time your looking up at the stars, and wondering why that constellation isn't the way you remember it, or reading an old book you've read a million times and come across a chapter you never remember reading, think of us. We're working yesterday to make a better tomorrow for you.™ |
