And for the "revisionists" of all stripes - historical or moral - don't miss Reason, Truth and History.
The shark has been dutifully jumped. I believe our going price is "WMDs that don't exist" and "a terrorist connection that doesn't exist". Kevin believes Kieran is right, and posts an eery quote from James "WWIV" Woolsey to back up his assertion that the "real reason" for the war in Iraq isn't being openly discussed.
Frankly, doesn't this all smack of some kind of secret club? Where the hoi polloi isn't in on the secret handshake? Kind of a Jack Nicholson "You can't handle the truth!" kind of patronizing way?
And it's no wonder that everyone is confused. The Hawks now universally admit that WMDs were just the bureaucratic reason everyone could agree on for going to war. It's apparently not even worth talking about. That was simply the reason for those in the cheap seats. As they're so keen to point out, they have got plenty more reasons for war where those came from. And if you donate to the Bush reelection fund, we'll actually tell you the real reasons for the war. The strategic ones. Or I guess you can read it on the web. But that's apparently too hard for our top notch reporters who are too busy sniffing the Administration's butt.
History is on their side, you know. The insiders may bend the truth, the press may lie to us, but in the end they're justified. As Kieran points out, one of the chief projects of conservative thought over the past fifty years has been to dismantle the idea that a leader, a social class, or a nation can confidently assume that History is on its side. So it is really is frickin' odd to see conservatives pushing this tripe. . . Or at very least allowing it to keep going on - to be an enabler and defender of this kind of behavior.
Oh well. . . Remains to be seen whether anyone else in the US continues to care. . . After all, the Shark has now been Jumped. It's all downhill from here on out.
