Severe Attention Disorder Linked with Drug Abuse

"A child may begin having poor academic performance and peer difficulties and then gravitate toward nonconformist peer groups as an adolescent where substance abuse is accepted as a way of life," said Molina.
I'm just saying.

actually that has been known for years and is found in every textbook.
the theoretical debate is wether drug abuse is caused by ADHD or a function of the high comorbidity of ADHD and anti-social behaviour (which in turn may be the cause/caused by ADHD). The school that maintains ADHD is just another term for "boyhood" is pretty much discredited these days.
AFAIK, the state of the art is the comorbidity explanation grounded in common cognitive deficits, but as it is not my line of work, this may no longer be the leading edge theoretically.
btw: what's this got to do with broken windows?

So are they just recycling old stuff for content, or what? Geesh. I'll be more selective in the future. Fat chance, I know, but with the previous threat of sanctions, I promise to try.

As to "broken windows", I just thought it an obtuse allusion to "unfixed things usually pull other unfixed things into their wake".

btw, whenever I do something like this, just remember the phrase "nerdy, inane and barely grammatical, and intelligible only to teenage subcultures".

the key graph from http://www.apa.org/journals/abn/803ab.html#17: Within probands, severity of childhood inattention symptoms predicted multiple substance use outcomes; childhood oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD) symptoms predicted illicit drug use and CD symptoms. Persistence of ADHD and adolescent CD were each associated with elevated substance use behaviors relative to controls.
the new thing here is a) longitudinal study and b) through a support for the thesis that ADHD and CD cause drug abuse in adolescents.
see also this line from Reuters (I perviously missed): "Childhood ADHD symptoms, particularly the inattention dimension of ADHD, predicted later substance use to a greater degree than childhood antisocial behaviors"
I appears I was wrong, ADHD does seem to cause the higher level of drug abuse. That's really something new then, good logitudinal studies of this stuff are rare.

<heh> Thanks for the followup.
